Deciding what the site had to solve, before deciding what it would look like
MASP, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, was founded in 1947 and moved in 1968 into the building Lina Bo Bardi designed on Avenida Paulista, a landmark of twentieth-century architecture. Its collection holds more than 11,000 works. We ran the consultancy and led the workshop for the creation of the institutional website, taking on the art direction, the UX and the wireframes.
A museum on that scale has many audiences at once: visitor, researcher, school, press, donor. The site had to serve all of them without becoming a labyrinth, and without competing with the visual force of the collection itself.
The work began with a workshop with the museum’s team, to decide together what the site had to solve before deciding what it would look like.
In practice, art direction, information architecture and wireframes: the navigation structure, the hierarchy of each page, and the place the artwork occupies on the screen.
A foundation built with the in-house team, not handed over to it. The museum came out of the process with the site defined and with the criteria to keep deciding on its own.
